Turkey’s 120-day phone rule: what eSIM travellers should check

Staying in Turkey for months? Check official IMEI registration guidance before assuming a travel eSIM removes the 120-day device restriction.

The rule concerns the device, not just your data allowance

Turkey’s telecommunications regulator, BTK, states that phones brought from abroad can be used without registration for 120 days and may be closed to communication if not registered within that period. The official guidance, your circumstances and your device status matter more than a seller’s broad exemption claim.

An IMEI identifies a device. It is not the same as your eSIM profile or remaining gigabytes. Paying for a new data package does not establish that a restricted device is eligible to use the network.

Does an international travel eSIM guarantee an exemption?

We do not make that guarantee. The fact that a package uses roaming does not, by itself, prove an exemption for every phone, visitor or length of stay. Check the official guidance or obtain advice from BTK for your circumstances before relying on connectivity beyond the stated period.

Do not assume that changing eSIMs, switching networks or crossing a border resets your device’s eligibility. Repeated visits, multiple device identifiers and personal registration eligibility deserve a specific official check rather than a generic travel-blog answer.

Before a long stay or a return visit

Find the IMEI in your phone’s settings and use official channels to check its registration status. Keep the identifier private rather than posting it in a public discussion. Note whether you have previously used that device in Turkey and the length of your planned stay.

Ask which rules apply to your status, whether registration is required, which documents are accepted and what the current fee is. Fees and administrative conditions can change; this guide deliberately does not quote a potentially outdated amount.

No connection does not automatically mean an IMEI block

Check that your phone supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked, has the correct mobile-data line selected and has remaining package data. Follow the roaming instructions supplied with the profile. These are different issues from device registration.

If settings and allowance appear correct, contact support with your order reference and the displayed error. For a suspected device restriction, verify the status through official channels. Do not delete the eSIM or buy another package as an unverified fix.
